Hong Kong Dollar is the official currency and remains freely convertible. There is no foreign exchange control in Hong Kong. Any currency in the territory, including the Chinese mainland renminbi (RMB), can be bought and sold on the open market.
To exchange any foreign currency, you can do it at any one of the banks or exchange shops or at the cashier counters of hotels. Daily exchange rates are available through any bank, but the Hong Kong dollar is linked to the US dollar, trading in a narrow range around HK$7.78 to US$1.
The Government issues coins in denominations of 10cents, 20cents, 50cents, $1, $2, $5 and $10. There are also five other kinds of notes in denominations of $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000.
